It was a pretty unique occassion in Cork last weekend at the Munster Senior Squash Open when Carlow players filled the top 2 slots in the Mens A and Ladies A finals.
Arthur Gaskin and Brian Byrne, Claire O'Brien and Ciara Moloney were the players involved and the fact these have been playing since they were juniors here in the club and are now at the top of Irish Open events drew lots of praise for Carlow squash.

"And speaking of happy: a special shout-out to the junior program at Carlow Lawn & Tennis Club, who provided the Munster Open 2012 with not two, not three, but all four finalists of the A-draws." Dan Z.Irish Squash

As part of a National game development initiative, Irish Squash have formulated and are in the process of delivering a Club Coaching Qualification Course across the country.

The purpose of this course is to identify and then qualify a network of fulltime / part-time coaches who are interested in using this qualification for the good of their club and for the growth of squash as a sport.

The first phase of the course has been delivered at 5 venues to date (Belfast, Galway, Cork, The Curragh and Carlow) with an average of 10 people per course. Designed to run over three weekends, spaced one month apart, the program combines tutorials, practical workshops and assignments. The course has been designed and delivered by Jacob Guldbaeck from Irish Squash, with input from Eoin Ryan and Derek Ryan.

In total, 7 participants from Carlow are currently undertaking the program, with a reassuring participation from younger members Cathal Hennessy, Ryan Luther and Niamh O’Keeffe. Other Carlow attendees are Paul Jennings, JP Luther, Niamh Brennan and James McDermott., while Pat Morrissey (Freshford) and Joe Sheridan (Naas) are also partaking in the Carlow sessions.

The first session took place at Carlow LTC on Sat Aug 29th, with the first full weekend session taking place on Sat and Sun last ( 1st and 2nd Sept). The final tutorial section is scheduled for October 6th and 7th, with practical examinations then to be undertaken prior to certification.

It is hoped that this and similar courses may assist clubs like Carlow further develop Under-age and Senior Programs by providing some of the essential skills required to introduce more players to the sport.
